Professional supervision, otherwise known as Clinical Supervision, is considered to be an essential part of good professional practice in the healthcare profession. Professional supervision in the helping professions (including, amongst others, counselling, psychology, the therapies and careers work) is a mutually agreed and often contracted relationship between two or more professionals working together in a positive and supportive process.
Supervision plays a key role in supporting professional development and learning, so engaging in one is essential for everyone’s practice to raise their clinical standards.
Effective supervision has multiple benefits for the supervisee:
1. Support professional practice and reflection to help them develop insight and help maintain and refine their good practice. It can help them learn from mistakes, put things right and avoid repeating them again in the future, which can in turn help increase their confidence and lead to improvements in service provision.
2. Support continuing professional development (CPD). Supervision supports their CPD by helping to identify and respond to any learning gaps they might have, which will help ensure that their skills and knowledge are up to date.
3. Improve client outcomes by safeguarding and raising practice standards. Regular supervision can help the supervisee reflect on challenging areas in their work.
4. Supervision improves personal wellbeing which serves as additional emotional support in facing challenging cases or instances of vicarious trauma.
